Save or discard a draft

Save work on an existing page as a draft, or discard a draft you no longer need.

Audience: Editor, AdministratorRequired access: PagesVerified on Language: English

Use a draft when you want to save changes to an existing page without publishing its content yet. After you save, the editor shows that the page has an active draft.

Before you start

Check that you selected the right site and language with the language button in the top-right corner. Draft options appear only on pages and sites that use drafts. If you cannot see Pages, ask an administrator for access to Pages.

Your labels may be in Dutch. Use the buttons in the page editor if the wording differs.

Save a draft

  1. Open Pages and choose the page you want to edit.
  2. Check whether the page already has an active draft. If you see another person's name or a recent time, ask them before changing or replacing their work.
  3. Make your changes.

Changing the page URL

If you changed the page URL, saving the draft can change that URL on the live website right away. Check any redirects and test an old link after saving.

  1. Choose Save draft and wait for the confirmation.

Check the result: you see a saved confirmation and the editor still shows an active draft. Your content changes are saved in that draft, not published as page content.

Discard a draft

Use this only when you have checked the draft and no one still needs it.

  1. Open the page with the active draft.
  2. Read the draft and check who created it.

Discarding cannot be undone

Discarding removes the active draft. You cannot recover it from drafts. It also does not undo a page URL change that already took effect.

  1. Open the secondary action next to Save draft, choose Discard draft, then confirm.
  2. Wait for the editor to return to the normal page actions.

Check the result: the active-draft notice is gone and the editor again shows its normal save or publish actions.

If something does not work

I cannot see drafts

Drafts may not be enabled for this page or site. Check that you opened a normal page, then ask an administrator if the option is still missing.

Saving is blocked

The page may already have an active draft. Save that draft, or discard it only after checking its content and owner.

Saving a draft fails

Reload the editor and check whether the draft was saved. Try once more. If it still fails, send your administrator the page name and the time of the error.

Drafts and the trash

A draft belongs to a page that still exists. Use the trash when the page itself is gone from Pages.
